CURRICULUM:

Our curriculum contains educational framework designed to develop 21st century skills. All curriculum standards reflect a continuum of learning from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. We continuously update curriculum documents to ensure they are academically challenging and developmentally appropriate to encourage and nurture life-long learners. – ADW Catholic Schools

Students at Cardinal Hickey Academy are offered classes in two ways- Core Subjects on a daily basis and Special Subjects on a weekly basis. By offering this mixed curriculum, we are better able to engage young learners in a manner they find most comfortable, ensuring each student receives the maximum benefit from their time at CHA.

Data-Driven Curriculum

Teachers use data from various assessments and classroom experiences to inform their planning and instructional approach. Teachers use data to help students reach their individual goals as well as grade-level mastery.

Core Subjects:

  • Religion – Daily instruction with a weekly school-wide mass and Rosary participation

  • Language Arts – Reading, Literature, Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary, Creative Writing, Penmanship (Grades 3-8 are expected to submit all handwritten work in cursive)

  • Mathematics – 7th grade Pre-Algebra, 8th grade Algebra with gender separated classroom

  • Science – general sciences in all grades, STEAM Program in grades 7-8, Science activities are taught in the Science Lab for grades 5-8

  • Social Studies – K-8 with emphasis on Maryland State History in 4th grade and U.S., Ancient and World History in grades 5-8

Special Subjects:

  • Spanish (PreK-8)

  • Physical Education (PreK-8)

  • Art

  • Music – handbells, band, choral concerts, and drama

  • Library Skills/Media Center

  • Computer Literacy and Technology – Every student is expected to have their own Chromebook. We have school-wide Internet access, and SMART Boards in every classroom.

ELEMENTARY

We combine our classroom curriculum with hands-on learning activities to help students develop a passion for learning while gaining an understanding of God’s central role as the source of all knowledge.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

This is a period of prominent change and growth and can be a challenging time for students. We focus on helping each student to thrive through this time of transition, providing a consistent, loving environment with sound academics and a variety of activities. We build confidence in our students and ensure they are prepared for the next steps in their academic journey.
