Dedicated to Community, Faith, and Excellence

Cardinal Hickey Academy (CHA) is a regional Catholic school nestled on the campus of the Covenant Community of Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, in northern Calvert County, MD. In providing a rigorous curriculum, CHA nurtures the whole child in an environment where each child can achieve academic and personal excellence. Pastors, administration, faculty, and parents create a solid partnership conducive to developing the students as learners, leaders, and people of faith and service.

Our certified staff members take advantage of professional development opportunities and 100% of full-time teachers are Catechists. They strive daily to help students grow spiritually, academically, and emotionally by embracing the Gospel Message of Jesus Christ. CHA’s comprehensive curriculum focuses on the Academic Standards of the Archdiocese of Washington.

The faculty works tirelessly to integrate technology into the learning environment.

  • In January 2018, we introduced Chromebooks as our device of choice for students, and now are 1:1

  • Every classroom is equipped with an Interactive Whiteboard.

  • All grades are instructed to use the STEM curriculum in our state-of-the-art science lab.

Innovative programs include our Montessori Preschool and Catechist of the Good Shepherd Atrium. Spanish classes begin in the Montessori Preschool thru 8th-grade. Opportunities for student leadership are provided through the CHA Honor Society and the school’s Student Government and Safety Patrol. Our school celebrates involvement in the fine arts, handbells, band, choral performances, and spring musical. Graduates are recruited by top Catholic high schools and matriculate to the nation’s best colleges. The rich tradition of Community, Faith, and Excellence are evidenced in abundance.

What Makes us Different?

More than being a Catholic school, CHA welcomes many different denominations. We are forthcoming in our faith and our commitment to helping students discover and develop their gift for God’s glory. Additionally, we are excited to work with parents to ensure students are not just prepared for whatever challenges face them in their future, but that they overcome them through their foundation of faith in Christ.

Welcome to Cardinal Hickey Academy, We’re Glad You’re Here!

History of the Academy

Cardinal James Hickey dedicates the school in 1997.

Cardinal James Hickey dedicates the school in 1997.

  • For twenty years the Church of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. benefited from the spiritual leadership and pastoral care of its fourth Archbishop, His Eminence James Cardinal Hickey. When Monsignor Paul Dudziak, the founding pastor of the Covenant Community of Jesus the Good Shepherd, and his parishioners opened the school they decided to name it for the Cardinal with the intention of honoring him in his lifetime with a living legacy, a tribute to his years of dedicated service and commitment to Catholic education.

  • In the fall of 1997 the new school, Cardinal Hickey Academy, was opened in Owings, Maryland. Cardinal James Hickey was present for the dedication of the Academy on September 4. The school opened for kindergarten through fourth grade. A new addition, consisting of a family center and additional classroom space, was completed in the fall of 2000. A third addition to include the Media Center, Technology Lab and a Lecture room was completed in 2007.

  • When asked by a Washington Post reporter how he would like to be remembered, Cardinal Hickey told her, “First, I’d like them to say he was always loyal to his church. Second, that he was a friend to Catholic education. And third, if they don’t want to say the first two, at least I would hope they would chisel on the stone, ‘He served the poor.'”
