Dear Parents:
Thank you for your interest in Cardinal Hickey Academy. In addition to a
strong, Catholic, religious education, the Academy offers a challenging
core curriculum, which includes the integration of science and
technology. Our phonics based reading program is supplemented with a
comprehensive literature series. Foreign language instruction is offered
to all Academy students; Spanish begins in kindergarten and Latin in grade
7. The Academy has an outstanding Fine Arts curriculum: general music for
students in kindergarten through grade 8, a band program, and hand bell
choir; our multi-media art program integrates the study of art history
with studio classes, culminating with a spring art show of individual and
group pieces.
A full time teaching assistant in kindergarten provides an instructor to
student ratio of 1:15. Part-time teaching assistants in grades 1, 2, and
3 allow for individualized attention to student needs. In grades 7 and 8,
ability grouping affords the opportunity for advanced math students to
complete Algebra I upon graduation.
A variety of extra-curricular activities are offered. Academy students
have the opportunity to participate in soccer and basketball. Our
handbell choir is composed of students in grades 5 through 8 who play for
various school and community events. Students may join the school band
beginning in 4th grade. Students may participate in county
spelling bees and the Washington Post Investment Contest. Our drama
program includes a spring musical performed by our 5th through
8th grade students. We offer an annual chess & checkers
tournament, Girls Scouts, safety patrol, and yearbook club. Students in
grades 7 and 8 who demonstrate high levels of scholarship, leadership,
service, citizenship and character may be invited to membership in the
Cardinal Hickey Academy Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.
Most of our eight classes of graduates chose to continue their education
in a Catholic setting and were accepted to their Catholic high schools of
choice - nearly one-third of these students received scholarship offers.
The majority of our alumni are excelling in honors or AP level courses at
their respective high schools.
You are cordially invited to visit us to learn more about the Academy. We
will host an open
house on
Monday, January 26, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. School tours are available upon
request if you are
unable to
attend our open house. Open registration for the 2009-2010 school year
